Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't I see markers near me?

Make sure you've granted HistoryTrail permission to access your location. Go to Settings → HistoryTrail → Location and select "While Using the App." Also note that some areas have more markers than others—rural areas may have fewer nearby markers.

Where does the marker data come from?

All marker information comes from The Historical Marker Database (HMdb.org), a volunteer-maintained catalog of historical markers worldwide. If you find an error or want to contribute, visit HMdb.org directly.

A marker is missing or has incorrect information

HistoryTrail displays data from HMdb.org. To report corrections or add new markers, please visit HMdb.org and use their contribution tools. Updates will appear in HistoryTrail after HMdb processes them.

Can I use HistoryTrail offline?

Favorites you've saved are available offline, but finding new nearby markers requires an internet connection to query the marker database.

How do I get directions to a marker?

Tap the directions button on any marker detail screen. This will open Apple Maps (or your default navigation app) with directions to that location.

Does HistoryTrail track my location?

No. Your location is used only at the moment you search for nearby markers. We don't store your location history or track your movements. See our Privacy Policy for details.
