Privacy Policy

Last updated: February 14, 2026

The short version: HistoryTrail uses your location only to show nearby markers. We don't track you, store your location history, or share your data with anyone.

Overview

HistoryTrail is designed with privacy in mind. We collect the minimum information necessary to show you historical markers near your location, and we don't store or share your personal data.

Location Data

HistoryTrail requests access to your location to find historical markers near you. Here's how we handle location:

You can use HistoryTrail without location access by searching for markers by place name, though the "nearby" feature requires location permission.

Data Collection

We do not collect personal data. Specifically:

Marker Data

Historical marker information displayed in the app comes from The Historical Marker Database (HMdb.org), a volunteer-maintained public resource. When you tap through to view full marker details, you are visiting HMdb.org directly, and their privacy policy applies to that interaction.

Local Storage

HistoryTrail stores your favorites and preferences locally on your device. This data:

Navigation

When you request directions to a marker, HistoryTrail hands off to Apple Maps or your default maps application. The navigation occurs entirely within that application, and their privacy policies apply.

Children's Privacy

HistoryTrail does not collect personal data from anyone, including children under 13.

Changes to This Policy

If we make changes to this privacy policy, we will update the "Last updated" date above. Significant changes will be communicated through the App Store update notes.
